PRAIRIE LAKES ICE ARENA: A DEVELOPER’S PERSPECTIVE

FROM VISION TO REALITY: THE EARLY SPARK

In January 2020, developer Jesse Craig introduced the idea of a much-desired ice arena to Watertown, South Dakota, as part of a new mixed-use development concept known as Lakes of Willow Creek. His vision placed the arena as the centerpiece of the commercial section of the project, surrounded by much-needed restaurants, a hotel, and additional recreational amenities.

The arena was intended to serve as both a sports destination and an economic catalyst, drawing visitors from across the region while enhancing local quality of life. Early momentum built quickly; through numerous closed-door discussions, preliminary plans, and bid processes began to take shape.

Eventually, city leaders determined that the scale and scope of the project warranted a shift to a public platform, inviting community input and oversight. Recognizing the change in direction, Jesse stepped back and allowed the city to take the lead on the building process. Still, it was through his original vision that the master plan for what would become the Prairie Lakes Ice Arena came to life.
